NYRA is looking for NYC Public School students to speak out against overpolicing in schools

Dear New York NYRA Members,
We have recently been offered an exciting opportunity to have a tangible impact on youth and student rights here in New York. The NYCLU has recently filed a lawsuit against New York City and the New York Police Department to try to force much needed reforms to the way our school's security is dealt with. Currently, over 5,000 School Safety Officers – NYPD employees who are empowered to arrest and use physical force against students – are working in New York City Schools. Their excessive methods have led to students as young as five being arrested for things like drawing on desks, talking on cell phones, wearing hats, chewing gum and behaving disrespectfully. Disproportionately aggressive actions by SSOs have created a sense of fear and hostility in schools that many of us have experienced firsthand. NYRA has been asked to sign on to this lawsuit and so we are looking for current and former New York City public school students who have had these experiences with SSOs to join u s.
Are you a current or former New York City Public School student?
Are you, or do you know someone who is, afraid of the SSOs in their schools?
Do you in some way alter your behavior (avoiding certain halls etc.) to stay away from SSOs?
Are you afraid because of the climate in school or things you have heard about SSOs?
If the answer to one or more of these questions is yes, please reply to this email or email nyra@youthrights.org. You can also call 202-296-2992 ext. 131 and ask for Alex. NYRA hopes to be named as a plaintiff in this case and it will be our priority to protect the confidentiality of students who choose to step forward. If you are concerned about abusive police presence in our schools and you think you can help us, please step forward.
